Salinas, Calif. – Monterey County is home to over four hundred foster children and youth. Children and youth who are growing up in the foster care system face unique challenges and are in need of many support systems as they grow. They are often moved from place to place and do not have a secure family support structure. National and statewide research shows that a high percentage of children who are removed from their homes and placed in the foster care system experience both short and long term challenges in school. Traumatic histories of abuse and neglect compounded by frequent changes in foster care placements contribute to issues in the classroom and/or reduced academic achievement.

On Thursday, June 16, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Hartnell College’s Steinbeck Hall, the Monterey County Office of Education and the Monterey County Department of Family and Children's Services will host the first Monterey County Foster Youth Educational Summit to work to improve the educational success of Monterey County's foster youth.

Workshops will be held for current and former foster youth on self-advocacy, and presentation skills, and two workshops will teach agency/collaborative participants on best practices for collaboration and the need for school stability through placement changes.

Sade Daniels, an award winning poet, foster care activist, and author will be the morning’s keynote speaker. For more information on Sade, visit
