Twenty Monterey County Students Will Visit Washington D.C. as Winners of U.S. Constitution Project Essay Contest
Salinas, CA - Twenty Monterey County students will visit Washington D.C. as winners of the annual Monterey County United States Constitution Project, sponsored by the Dan and Lillian King Foundation.
The students, representing five Monterey County middle schools, were honored at an awards ceremony, Tuesday March 3, at the Monterey Office of Education.
Now in its third year, the goal of the project is to enrich the lives of Monterey County 8th graders with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights which frame our country.
“These students are learning why the U.S. Constitution is such a remarkable document,” said Nader Agha, President of the Dan and Lillian King Foundation Board of Directors. “Their trip to Washington D.C. will enhance their appreciation even further.”
Students studied the Constitution in their 8th grade U.S. history classes, and were asked to write an essay about the document’s impact on both the country and their personal lives. The essays were submitted to the Dan and Lillian King Foundation, which selected four winners from each school.
“This is a great example of how rigorous project-based instruction gives students a deeper understanding of subjects,” said Dr. Nancy Kotowski, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools.
The 20 students, plus a teacher from each school, will travel to Washington D.C. and Philadelphia, PA, to experience the buildings, monuments, and documents that have shaped our nation’s history. Each student also received recognition from the U.S. House of Representatives, the California State Senate, and California State Assembly.
