Salinas, CA – The Big Sur International Marathon is partnering with the Monterey County Office of Education to present a free,  award winning youth fitness program, JUST RUN®.  All elementary teachers, administrators and interested parents are welcome to attend the one-hour informational session on Tues., Jan. 31, 2012 from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. at the MCOE offices located at 901 Blanco Circle in Salinas. Refreshments will be provided.

The goal of the JUST RUN program is to promote healthy lifestyles while combating childhood obesity and its related illnesses.  Many local schools are participating in JUST RUN and have posted higher academic and fitness scores.

“JUST RUN is easy to implement and is an excellent solution for teachers seeking to provide free, quality physical activity for their students. This is a great way to energize students during the school day so they are more attentive to the academic work,” said Dr. Nancy Kotowski, Monterey County Superintendent of Schools.  

Elementary schools are required to provide instruction in physical education for a total period not less than 200 minutes each 10 school days, exclusive of recesses and the lunch period.  JUST RUN can assist teachers and schools help meet the Education Code requirement.  The program includes teacher training, advice and support.

“Our program is running based, but diverse and fun. Children of all ages and abilities are successful. One of our goals is to have children realize that exercise is part of a healthy lifestyle and should be incorporated into their lives on a daily basis. We provide leader training and incentives and awards for the children when specific goals are met,” stated Susan Love, JUST RUN administrator.
