What are TEIs?

Technology Enhanced Items are test questions featured on the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics portions of the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Common Core test. They differ from traditional test questions (like multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank) in that they involve doing more complex tasks in order to answer a question (such as drawing a line on a graph, for example). The pedagogical idea behind these questions is that they are more cognitively complex and therefore (1) require higher level thinking and (2) can offer more detailed assessment data to instructors.

This task asks students to classify a set of equations, expressions, or quantities into a set of predefined categories. To answer, students must click on an object, move the mouse to the desired category, and then click to drop it into that space.

Connections [back to top]

This interaction requires the student to click on a digital content object in one section of the screen and then click on a digital content object in a different section of the screen. After the second click, the two objects will be connected with a line. Students can click on the two objects in either order to connect them. Students can click on a single connection line and move it to the Trash Bin to remove the line.

Partition Line Then Place Points [back to top]

This task requires a student to partition a number line and then select one or more of the partition points on the line (placing one or more markers on each selected partition point).

Prompt: Partition the number line below into fifths. Then place a point on each value that is greater than 1/3.

In the above example, red represents the things the student must place. Red lines represent dividing the number line into fifths while red dots represent numbers greater than 1/3.
