Reorganization Ballot Measure

Measure Question: Shall South Monterey County Joint Union High School District (SMCJUHSD) be reorganized to form a new unified school district covering the territory of Greenfield Union School District to be known as Greenfield Unified School District, and a second unified school district covering the rest of the territory of SMCJUHSD to be known as King City Joint Unified School District, resulting in the dissolution of Greenfield Union School District, King City Union School District, and SMCJUHSD?

About the Measure: Voters within the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District attendance area will be asked whether to approve the reorganization of three local school districts into two new unified school districts.

 

Who Can Vote: Eligible registered voters who reside within the South Monterey County Joint Union High School District boundaries may vote on this measure.

 

Measure Approval:  A simple majority (more than 50%) of votes cast is required for approval.

Election of Unified School Board Members:  Voters will also be asked to elect governing board members for the new unified boards who would take office if the unification measure is approved

This measure is on the ballot because the California State Board of Education directed the Monterey County Committee on School District Organization to develop Plans and Recommendations to reorganize the current school district structure in South Monterey County and, after reviewing the final Plans and Recommendation, approved placing the proposal before voters. Under California law, this type of school district reorganization requires voter approval before it can take effect.

 

The proposed Plans and Recommendation was developed through a collaborative planning process involving the Monterey County Committee on School District Organization, the Monterey County Office of Education, Greenfield Union Elementary School District, King City Union Elementary School District, South Monterey County Joint Union High School District, legal counsel, consultants, and community stakeholders. Over the course of many months, the County Committee carefully reviewed the educational impacts of the proposed reorganization, financial feasibility, governance structure, division of property, assets, and liabilities, and public input received during community meetings, public hearings, and written public comment before adopting its final recommendation to create two new unified school districts.
