Why MCOE’s Homeless Children & Youth Services Program Is More Vital Than Ever

Why MCOE’s Homeless Children & Youth Services Program Is More Vital Than Ever
MCOE Communications

Over the past decade, the Monterey County Office of Education has seen a steady increase in the number of homeless students from TK to 12th grade.

The California Department of Education released data in October 2024, indicating that the percentage of homeless students in Monterey County increased by 16 percent compared to the previous school year.

The Monterey County Office of Education expects that number to climb once it receives updated data in July.

More than 72,800 students were enrolled in Monterey County schools during the past school year. Of those, 13,500 students experienced homelessness, which is roughly 18 percent.

The primary cause is a lack of affordable housing.

Monterey County Office of Education is holding its Stuff the Bus campaign in partnership with United Way from July 14-18, 2025.

Thousands of book bags will be distributed to students across the county in the fall before school starts.
