Salinas, CA – At times, it is so quiet you can hear a pin drop. Emotions can rise and fall with every letter of every word. There is a certain type of exhilaration that can be found only at the Countywide Spelling Bee, sponsored by the Monterey County Office of Education.

On Saturday, March 4, the best middle school spellers in the county will gather for an afternoon of competitive spelling, attempting to spell their way to the grand prize of a trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, May 30-June 1, 2023.

Twenty-five students – all winners of spelling bees at their individual schools -- are scheduled to compete.

“All of the spellers have worked so hard and each of them are already spelling bee winners at their individual schools,” said Monterey County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss. “Their work and dedication has given them the gift of a wide and rich vocabulary, which is important in all of their future endeavors.”

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational program, having launched in 1925. The purpose of the Scripps National Spelling Bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. More than 7 million people watched last year’s national finals on ION and Bounce, which are part of Scripps’ portfolio of free, over-the-air national networks, as well as streaming channels owned by Scripps Networks.

Saturday’s Countywide Spelling Bee is admission-free and the public is invited to attend. The winner of the Monterey County Spelling Bee will be announced in a follow-up media release after the event.
