Migrant Youth Day 1

Middle school students from throughout the county visited California State University, Monterey Bay, on January 27th for Migrant Youth Day. One hundred and thirteen students attended workshops on job opportunities in the fields of law and agribusiness, and toured the campus, visiting the Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library, the University Center, Chapman Science Academic Center and a residence hall. The day ended with lunch in the dining commons where the middle school students sat side-by-side with current CSUMB students to share their experiences.

With tuition, financial aid, housing, large campuses and so many more “unknowns,” college life can seem pretty intimidating. In an effort to de-mystify the process, MCOE’s Migrant Education Program Region XVI partners with CSUMB each year to bring middle school students to a welcoming college campus, where they got a firsthand look at college life – everything from academics to campus food and dorm life. For many, it is their first visit to a college campus.

MCOE’s Migrant Education Program Region XVI serves approximately 13,000 students in Monterey County, making it the largest Migrant Ed program in the state.
