Salinas, Calif. – Teams from 36 Monterey County public and private schools, made up of nearly 300 students from upper elementary, middle and high schools, will assemble at Salinas High School from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 for the 48th annual Mathletics Competition.

The morning begins with the competition, held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., where students take exams in Integrated Math, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, and for the first time ever in the Mathletics competition, Statistics. Professors then grade the exam and students enjoy lunch and a rotation of various learning opportunities on topics such as environmental science, astronomy, and coding. Awards begin at 1 p.m.

Mathletics is a math contest held each May to encourage excellence in math and recognize the achievements of individual students and the schools they represent. The Monterey County Office of Education and California State University, Monterey Bay Mathematics Department sponsor the event.

The top graduating high school senior taking the Advanced Calculus exam will receive the Richard Morgantini Scholarship of $1,000. First, second, and third place winners in each level will receive gift cards, gift certificates and an Olympic-sized first, second or third place medal.

Mathletics is funded in part by long-time supporter, the Monterey County Richard Morgantini Foundation, as well as Green Giant by Growers Express, and the California Mathematics Council-Monterey Bay affiliate.
