Salinas, Calif. – At its regular meeting today, November 10, the Monterey County Board of Education voted unanimously 6-0 in favor of Annette Yee Steck as the new Trustee representing Area One - a seat vacated by the passing of the incumbent, Harvey Kuffner, whose term was to expire in November 2022.

The County Board publicly interviewed two candidates, read letters of support, and heard from members of the public on the eligibility of the candidates.

“We are excited to welcome Annette Yee Steck to the County Board of Education to fill the seat that our treasured Harvey Kuffner had occupied for 25 years. Harvey served with great commitment, and left a legacy of profound insight and knowledge,” said Dr. Deneen Guss, County Superintendent of Schools and Secretary to the County Board. “Like Harvey, Annette is a recognized and esteemed leader in the Trustee Area One community and has deep experience in school governance. She has dedicated her life to ensuring all students are well-prepared for their futures, and she has a true heart for public service.”

Yee Steck resides in Carmel and has lived in Monterey County for 31 years. She is a Financial Advisor to California School Districts and an instructor for the California School Boards Association’s Masters in Governance Program. For 27 years, she served as a school board member for the Carmel Unified School District and was voted board president six times. She is married to Loren Steck and they are proud parents to Jonathan, 31.

“I have dedicated much of my life to achieve the goals of helping ensure that our students are optimally prepared for their future lives and careers, and that opportunity is equally available to all of the students in our schools,” Yee Steck said. “Given the wide discrepancy in privilege and preparation among students in our County, I understand that there is much to be done to help Monterey County schools achieve those goals, and I want to continue to help.”

Trustee Area One consists mainly of New Monterey, Pacific Grove, Del Monte Forest, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, and Big Sur.

Trustee Yee Steck will serve until November 2022, when the provisional term for this seat will expire. The seat will then be open for a four-year term at the general election to be held in November 2022.
