Provisional Appointment to Monterey County Board of Education Trustee Area One Terminated as of January 10, 2022

Salinas, CA – The Monterey County Board of Education faced a vacancy in Trustee Area One when long-time board member Harvey Kuffner passed away suddenly on September 12, 2021. As a result, the Monterey County Board of Education requested applications for the provisional appointment to the seat, interviewed two candidates, and voted unanimously to provisionally appoint Annette Yee-Steck of Carmel to fill the vacancy until the trustee elected at the November 8, 2022 election takes office.

When a school board provisionally appoints a trustee to fill a vacancy, members of the designated trustee area may file within thirty days of the appointment a petition for the conduct of a special election to fill the vacancy. On December 10, 2021, County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Deneen Guss received such a petition from community members in Trustee Area One. Pursuant to California Education Code 5019, the County Superintendent had 30 days to verify the collected signatures and determine if the petition was legally sufficient.

On January 10, 2022, the petition was concluded to be legally sufficient by the Monterey County Superintendent of Schools because it included the appropriate number of signatures as required by law. Signatures were verified and validated by the Monterey County Registrar of Voters. As a result, the provisional appointment to Trustee Area One was automatically terminated effective January 10, 2022.

The Monterey County Superintendent of Schools will now submit a Call for Election to the Monterey County Elections Department to fill the vacancy in Trustee Area One through election at the upcoming Statewide Primary Elections to be held on June 7, 2022. The individual elected shall hold office for the remainder of the term until the trustee elected at the November 8, 2022 election takes office.

Individuals who reside in Trustee Area One and are interested in submitting candidacy papers to be on the upcoming ballot should contact the Monterey County Elections Department. Interested individuals must appear in person at the Monterey County Elections Department in order to execute candidacy papers. For information, please visit the MontereyCountyElections.us website or call 831.796.1499.

The elected individual will serve until the next general election on November 8, 2022. Monterey County Board of Education Members typically serve a four-year term. Trustee Area One consists mainly of New Monterey, Pacific Grove, Del Monte Forest, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Carmel Valley, and Big Sur. Information on the primary responsibilities of the County Board can be found on the County Board section of the Monterey County Office of Education website.
