Seaside, Calif. – The 95 judges at the 2018 Monterey County Science & Engineering Fair had a difficult job this weekend, as they reviewed 285 projects and interviewed 433 student scientists from public and private schools across the county.

The three-day event concluded Sunday with the presentation of awards to top projects in such fields as Applied Mechanics, Material Science, Aerodynamics and Plant Biology.

The top two Senior Division projects will advance to compete in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania May 13 - 18. They are:

  • Grand Prize Winner: Camryn More, 11th grade, and Annalisa More 9th grade, Salinas High School, “Detection of Peanut Protein in Public Schools in Monterey County and on Domestic Commercial Airliners”
  • First Runner-Up: Anjo Pagdanganan, 9th grade, Salinas High School, “Analyzing the Efficiency of Subsequent Convolutional Layers with Small-Scale Images”

Top projects across the Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12) Divisions qualified for the twenty-one (21) spots available to Monterey County to participate in the California State Science Fair, April 23 and 24 in Los Angeles. The qualifying students listed by division are:
