Parent Workshops

The parent workshops aim to develop awareness, knowledge, and capacity with Migrant parents regarding the U.S. educational system, programs, and community resources. The parent workshops increase the parents capacity to advocate for their children and have the strategies to be a teacher at home.

Migrant Parent State Conference and Regional Migrant Parent Conference

The California Department of Education hosts a biannual Migrant Parent State Conference in collaboration with the State Parent Advisory Council (SPAC). The State Conference serves between 750–1,000 migrant parents from throughout the state and provides learning opportunities through educational workshops and keynote speakers.

The Regional Parent Conference is held biannually (alternating with the State Conference) and is hosted by the Migrant Regional Office. This conference provides learning opportunities to more than 250 parents from throughout Monterey County in the areas of health, education, and social services. The conference is also an opportunity to highlight effective programs and motivate parents to be involved in the education of their children.

Parent Leadership Academy

The Parent Leadership Academy is a multi-day parent training that supports the Regional Parent Advisory Council members as well as other Migrant parent leaders from all districts in understanding their role and responsibility as a parent. The academy supports parents to enhance their leadership skills and familiarize themselves with the program's goals and objectives. The academy builds capacity for parents to successfully and meaningfully interact with the school system. Parents have the opportunity to work together to gain the knowledge and skills to function in leadership roles and represent a “parent voice” to help the direction of their families, programs, and communities.
