Monterey County Office of Education

Leadership, Support and Service to Prepare All Students for Success

Dr. Deneen Guss, County Superintendent of Schools

On Friday, March 15 th , a community event was sponsored by the MCOE Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Program and the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service Center (DHHSC) of Monterey County. Forty-five students, family and community members joined together to listen to presentations and participate in a panel discussion on deaf education and community involvement.

MCOE Director (retired) Deb Still and DHHSC Director Wayne Johnson shared valuable information, including local and regional services available to students and adults who are deaf or hard of hearing. Krystal Rios, family educator, informed attendees about Reaching Out and Communicating with Kids (ROCK), a program that focuses on increasing communication in the home. The panel discussion, with audience participation, covered a wide range of relevant and timely topics.

ASL interpretation, dinner, and child care were provided by MCOE, and community service hours were earned by high school students who have participated in the MCOE D/HH program. The success of this wonderful night was evident by the high level of audience participation, the spontaneous conversations, and the genuine smiles and hugs that were shared.
